CREATIVE PROCESS HELPFUL TIPS — Post #1

Life is a series of fleeting moments, each filled with potential for inspiration. Often, we overlook the beauty and creativity that can be found in our daily routines. Whether it's the way sunlight filters through the trees or the laughter of a child playing, these small instances can ignite our imagination and fuel our passions. In this blog post, we will explore how to find inspiration in life's everyday moments, offering practical tips and examples to help you cultivate a mindset that embraces creativity.

The Power of Observation

Before embarking on posting my stories, I want to comment on what goes into my writing, as people have often asked me about my writing process. To find inspiration, we must first learn to observe the world around us. This means taking a moment to pause and truly see what is happening in our environment and relationships. Here are some ways I use to enhance my observational skills:

Engage Your Senses

  • Sight: Look for colors, shapes, and patterns. Notice how they interact with one another. I notice behaviors of plants, animals and people and their affect on the environment and my feelings. These inspire me because I see life lessons through them.

  • Sound: Listen to the sounds around you. The rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, or even the hum of a city can be inspiring. Even pinter moments and the unspoken subtexts of a conversation can give depth to my writing.

  • Touch: Feel the textures of objects. The roughness of bark, the softness of a pet's fur, or the coolness of a stone can evoke emotions and ideas.

  • Smell: Smell the air. Close your eyes and smell the subtleties and notice how they make you feel. Do they bring memories to mind? Recall the feelings associated with those memories.

  • Taste: Taste the air. Close your eyes and let it settle on your tongue. The dust, salt from the ocean, sand on a windy desert day, smoke from a nearby fire. All of these evoke memories, thoughts and feelings and can inspire writing.

Keep a Journal

Documenting your observations can be a powerful tool for inspiration. I write down my thoughts, questions, prayers, sketches, or even snippets of conversations. I have done this since I was six years old, and have 42 journals to prove it! This practice not only helps me remember these moments but also encourages me to reflect on them later.

Participate in Writing with a Pen Pal

This may sound old school, but writing in long hand on paper and mailing it to another writer can be really powerful. There is just something about the feel of thoughts flowing through your pen onto paper that is life affirming. Also, I've found that just writing in a journal alone can lead to a bit of self-absorption—a cocoon of myopic perspective and unawareness of other ways of seeing and hearing. Having a pen pal, one who is as invested in authentic writing and growth as you are, can really open up the mind. I think writing to someone forces a more natural way of speaking and thus, inherently more enjoyable to read. I had a pen pal for five years, and found the experience to be utterly invaluable in terms of growth, personal transformation, and writing.

Embracing Routine

While routines can sometimes feel monotonous, they can also be a source of inspiration. Here’s how to find creativity within your daily habits:

Change Your Perspective

Try altering your routine slightly. Take a different route to work or on your walk, change your morning coffee shop, or rearrange your workspace. These small changes can lead to new experiences and ideas.

Find Joy in the Mundane

Look for beauty in everyday tasks. Cooking, cleaning, or even commuting can become sources of inspiration if you approach them with a fresh mindset. For example, while cooking, pay attention to the colors and aromas of the ingredients. I cook by my 5 senses rather than a strict recipe. I talk to my plants and neighborhood birds. I sing while I do housework, and when doing laundry, I place a kiss on the front of each of my husband's shirts that I fold to carry with him throughout his workday. Little behaviors such as this bring me joy as well as enhancing and sparking my creativity in every area of my life.

Nature as a Muse

Nature is one of the most abundant sources of inspiration and a major one for me. It offers a wealth of beauty and tranquility that can rejuvenate our minds. It offers a multitude of lessons for me as well in my journey on Earth. Here are some ways to connect with nature:

Take Regular Walks

Spending time outdoors can clear your mind and open you up to new ideas. Whether it’s a stroll in the park or a hike in the mountains, being in nature allows you to observe the world in a different light, without the distractions of to-do lists and time schedules.

Create a Nature Journal

Document your experiences in nature. Sketch the landscapes, write about the feelings they evoke, or collect interesting leaves and flowers. This practice not only enhances your observational skills but also deepens your connection with the natural world.

Finding Inspiration in People

The people around us can be a rich source of inspiration. Their stories, experiences, and perspectives can ignite our creativity. Here’s how to tap into this resource:

Engage in Conversations

Take the time to talk to friends, family, or even strangers. Ask them about their passions, dreams, and challenges. You might discover new ideas or perspectives that resonate with you.

Read Biographies and Autobiographies

Every so often, in your range of reading genres, throw in a book, audio book or podcast (or blog!!) of the stories of someone else's life. The lives of the rich, famous, accomplished and genius tend to be the most celebrated and published, but there are many more unsung heroes in life that can inspire because they are infinitely more relatable-- everyday people like you and me, with flaws and foibles but incredible strength and resiliency, growth and creativity. I find these stories even more inspiring.

Attend Local Events

Participating in community events, workshops, or classes can also expose you to new ideas and people. Whether it's an art class, a book club, or a local concert, these experiences can spark inspiration and creativity.

Cultivating a Creative Mindset

To truly find inspiration in everyday moments, it’s essential to cultivate a creative mindset. Here are some strategies to help you develop this way of thinking:

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness encourages you to be present in the moment, which can enhance your ability to find inspiration. Try meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to focus on your surroundings.

Embrace Curiosity

Stay curious about the world. Ask questions, explore new interests, and seek out new experiences. This mindset can lead to unexpected sources of inspiration.

Conclusion

Finding inspiration in life's everyday moments is about cultivating awareness and embracing the world around you. By observing your environment, engaging with nature, connecting with people, and fostering a creative mindset, you can unlock a wealth of inspiration that enriches your life. Remember, inspiration is not always grand; sometimes, it’s found in the simplest of moments. So take a moment today to pause, observe, and let the beauty of your surroundings ignite your creativity.
